Working With Billy VanMeter at the Winchester 400 Weekend — A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Professional Motorsports Photography

This past October, I had the opportunity to work directly with Billy VanMeter and his team during the legendary Winchester 400 weekend at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana. As a full-time motorsports photographer covering short-track racing across the Midwest, this event was a prime example of how I partner with drivers, race teams, and sponsors to deliver high-quality, fast-turnaround content throughout an entire race weekend.

The Winchester 400 is one of the most iconic races in American short-track motorsports. Hosted at Winchester Speedway, a historic high-banked half-mile asphalt oval, the event draws major teams, Super Late Model stars, and rising drivers from all over the country.

Throughout the weekend, multiple series hit the track, including:

  • CRA/JEGS All-Stars Tour Pro Late Models

  • ARCA/CRA Super Series events

  • Local and regional divisions supporting the big show

For drivers and teams, the Winchester 400 weekend isn’t just a race—it’s a proving ground. For photographers, it’s one of the most challenging and rewarding environments in the sport.

Billy VanMeter’s Standout Weekend — Kicking Things Off With a Win

Billy entered Winchester weekend with momentum, and Friday night solidified that. He grabbed the win in the CRA/JEGS All-Stars Tour finale, securing the 2024 CRA/JEGS series championship.

I photographed the entire race—from pre-race staging to on-track action to the full victory celebration in victory lane. His team’s energy, emotion, and celebration created some incredible storytelling moments, and those photos became some of the most shared images of the weekend.

Competing in the Winchester 400

On Sunday, Billy took on the Winchester 400 in a Super Late Model—a marathon of speed, patience, and survival on one of the fastest and most unforgiving short tracks in America.

The Winchester 400 is notorious for:

  • 400 laps of high-intensity Super Late Model racing

  • Extreme tire wear from the high banking

  • Demanding pit strategy

  • A field stacked with elite drivers

Billy delivered a strong performance throughout the day, showing consistency, speed, and resilience on a track where simply finishing is an achievement. Watching him handle the car lap after lap through traffic on those 37-degree banks made for some incredible photo opportunities.
