CRA Street Stocks & Pro Late Models Take Over Owosso Speedway | A Full Day at the Track with Michigan Area Racing Connection
Some race days feel less like an event and more like an entire world you temporarily live inside for 10 or 12 hours. Saturday at Owosso Speedway was exactly that kind of day.
From the morning gates opening to late-night interviews, it was nonstop racing, storytelling, photography, and editing, all while chasing each moment worth capturing. Exhausting as they are, these long days are honestly the best kind of race days.
This weekend, CRA Street Stocks and Pro Late Models brought fans to one of Michigan's biggest short track racing nights at Owosso Speedway. My day with the Michigan Area Racing Connection became full media coverage—from morning pits to post-race winner interviews, rather than just photographing cars.
From Driver Coverage to Full-Day Media Coverage
One of the coolest parts about motorsports photography is how quickly your role changes throughout the day.
At one moment, I was focused on individual driver coverage and sponsor-focused imagery. The next moment, I was grabbing social media content, shooting feature action, conducting interviews, and helping tell the story of the entire event for racing fans following along online.
Saturday gave me the chance to reconnect with familiar faces throughout the pits and garage area, including my friend Billy VanMeter. Billy consistently represents short track racing well both on and off the track, and it’s fun seeing the respect he receives throughout the garage area after his 2025 championship season. Plus, he’s just a goofy dude to be around.
It was also cool seeing Chase Burda again, less than 16 hours after photographing him on dirt Friday night at I-96 Speedway. One of the things I love most about Midwest racing is how interconnected everything really is. Drivers bounce between dirt and asphalt, tracks share fanbases, and entire weekends can feel like one giant traveling racing family across Michigan.
I also spent time with drivers like Jimmy Tucker and others throughout the day, capturing candid behind-the-scenes moments between practice sessions, qualifying runs, and feature prep.
More Than Just Racing Photos
As much as I love action photography, one of the things I’ve really enjoyed working with Michigan Area Racing Connection is getting more involved in the journalism and storytelling side of racing coverage.
Throughout the day, I had opportunities to interview drivers, gather reactions, and later speak with the feature winner after the checkered flag flew. Those conversations add another layer to race coverage that fans don’t always get to experience from the grandstands alone.
After the feature race, drivers are finally exhaling after hours of adrenaline, crews are decompressing, and emotions are raw. These post-race moments are filled with so many emotions,, ranging from excitement and relief to frustration and pure exhaustion. Capturing these through photos and interviews preserves the night's atmosphere in a way that results sheets never can.
Owosso Always Feels Different
There’s just something about racing at Owosso Speedway that feels classic.
The speedway radiates old-school short-track energy. Decades of racing history are palpable as you walk through the pits. The Pro Late Models' roar echoes down the front stretch, fans pack the grandstands, and teams work under the lights late into the evening. The entire scene feels like a snapshot of Midwest racing culture.
Photographing asphalt racing always pushes me creatively in ways that are different from dirt racing. Everything happens faster visually. Lighting reflects differently, and lines are tighter. I didn’t really understand the differences until I shot back-to-back days on different surfaces. You constantly balance motion, sharpness, atmosphere, and timing while cars fly around the speedway.
By the time the green flag dropped for the feature race, the atmosphere around the track felt electric. Fans were locked into every restart, teams were fully in race mode, and the entire night had that feeling where you knew everybody involved understood this was one of the bigger race weekends on the local calendar.
Long Days, Worth Every Minute
By the time interviews wrapped up and gear was packed away, it had been a long day at the track.
But honestly, those are usually the best race weekends.
Days like this prove why local short track racing is important: it's about community, passion, fierce competition, and capturing unique stories that unfold moment by moment for dedicated fans, teams, and photographers.
Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat, the drivers took time for interviews, and the teams trusted me to document their seasons. I truly appreciate these connections. They motivate me to keep telling your stories on and off the track.
