A Night of Bowling for the Vocational Independence Program in Flint, MI
For the last Friday night in September, I traded the racetrack for the lanes. I photographed a fundraiser for the Vocational Independence Program (VIP) in Flint, Michigan, held at an old-school bowling alley, and it turned out to be one of the most fun assignments of the weekend.
The Vibe: Retro, Analog, and Full of Heart
The scene had a nostalgic, analog feel, right down to the computers. Think classic lanes, vintage signage, and the warm glow of a place that hasn't chased trends. With the organization's closest supporters in attendance, the mood was relaxed and familiar. People weren't performing for a camera. They were simply enjoying each other's company, the best possible setting for candid event photography.
That atmosphere is a gift to a photographer. The retro backdrops and mixed lighting give images character before you press the shutter. My job was to capture the feeling of the night, not just document who showed up.
Why I Switched to the Sigma 24-70mm Art
After a telephoto day at the golf scramble the day before, I moved to my Sigma 24-70mm Art lens for Friday. It suited the room for a few reasons:
Everything was contained. In a bowling alley, action and people are close together, so I didn't need the telephoto reach.
Attendees were comfortable with me. That let me work closer for natural, connected portraits and group moments.
Versatility. The zoom range let me go from wide shots that show off the lanes and decor to tighter images of guests laughing and cheering.
The Digital "Disposable" Camera
One of my favorite parts of the night was bringing along a digital "disposable" camera and letting the staff take their own photos. It fit the retro theme and was a fun icebreaker. It also gave the organization a second perspective from behind the lens, and the extra images added some exciting views on top of my coverage. Sometimes the best client experiences come from small, creative touches like this.
Why Nonprofit Event Photography Matters
Images from a fundraiser like this help a nonprofit tell its story long after the last frame is bowled. They're used in newsletters, on social media, in donor thank-yous, and in next year's promotion. Showing a supporter's real joy at an event does more than any brochure could.
